The JLU GateKeeper Tire Carrier is more than just a way to carry your spare-it's a performance upgrade, storage solution, and strength upgrade for serious Jeepers.
Our GateKeeper Tire Carrier is designed for those of us who love to wheel, and push the limits of our Jeep Wranglers and our own driving capabilities.
By running our JLU GateKeeper Tire Carrier, you gain so many different benefits. By taking the spare tire off the gate or bumper swing, you immediately gain the most departure angle possible with a tire carrier. This will help the most in off road conditions.
The JLU GateKeeper Tire Carrier also helps with weight distribution by centering the weight of the spare tire over the rear axle. This also puts more weight onto the front axle for more balanced and predictable handling characteristics.
We have done lots of testing on and off road and found that your Jeep will actually handle better while carrying the spare on our Gatekeeper than with not running a spare at all, and especially over a typical tire swing Set up.
In the JLU, another benefit is that the storage space is still available and becomes more of a concealed compartment. Once the carrier is installed, you can stow away all your bring along items underneath it and then close the rear seats to keep everything secure and in place while your wheeling.
The GateKeeper Tire Carrier in the back of a JLU is capable of handling up to a 38 Inch tire with no other modifications to the Jeep being necessary. Larger tires can still be accommodated up to a 40 Inch.
This would require trimming of the plastic that surrounds the rear cage crossmember (only above the tire) and removing the center trim on the main plastic panel on the tailgate. It may also be necessary to carry the spare tire with a lesser air pressure than what you would run on the street.
It also works with both hard tops and soft tops, and even the fastback style soft tops! Some soft tops will require the rear door surround to be trimmed around the carrier for proper fitment.
Hard tops will bolt down over the carrier and if desired you can install an additional gasket to the bottom of the hard top, in front of and behind the carrier rail, to seal it up as good as factory (not supplied). This keeps it just as easy as it was before to remove and reinstall your hard top.
The options for the GateKeeper are as followed.
Accessory Panels. This panel attaches to the back side of the carrier and allows you to easily Mount additional accessories to the carrier. A few examples are on board air systems, power inverters as well as any other items that can be bolted down.
Edge vs Classic Side Plate Gussets. These really are just a preference on the aesthetic appearance of the carrier. The Classic has the dimple died holes and the Edge has the more modern window Cut Outs
